Five Effect of COVID-19 On Family Law

FIVE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON FAMILY LAW

1. The family courts continue to be open, prioritising cases where children need to be protected and cases where people need an injunction to protect them, such as from another member of their household. The courts are setting up arrangements for some people to attend via telephone or Skype.

2. Couples who are sorting out their financial arrangements following separation, will need to ensure that their financial information is updated to take account of any changes in the value of their assets and liabilities, or any changes in their circumstances.

3. Parents living in separate households will need to consider the safety and feasibility of visits of their children between their homes.

4. Anyone who plans to divorce or who has a case already before the court may face some delays as the courts are focusing on urgent cases and are having to implement new ways of working.

5. As the situation progresses, there will be further effects on family law.
